Cochin has a rich history that dates back to the 14th century, making it a must-visit destination for history buffs. The city was founded by the Portuguese in 1503 but was later captured by the Dutch in 1663. It was later handed over to Britain after which it became part of India until 1947 when it became part of independent India again.

The city was founded by Vasco da Gama in 1498 as St. Thomas Fort (now called Cochin) after he visited India during his voyage around the world. He named it after St Thomas Becket who was martyred at Canterbury Cathedral in 1170s (the year before he arrived on these shores). During this time period there were two major religions that existed within this region: Hinduism and Christianity. These two faiths coexisted peacefully until they started to clash over religious beliefs during the 15th century when Muslims began arriving en masse from south-east Asia into Malabar Coast region near present day Kozhikode district which comprises parts of present day Kerala state (Kerala being home province where Cochin city lies)
