Lonavala is a hill station in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. The town was once known as Leander’s Fort and was built by Colonel George William Leander during 1737-42. It was named after an officer who served under him during this time period; however, he never reached India because he died en route to his posting at Dupleix-Cochin between 1740-41.

Karla caves are a series of rock-cut Buddhist cave temples in the Sahyadri mountains of Maharashtra, India. The caves were built during the reign of the Satavahana dynasty. The site is located at an altitude of 1,000 meters (3,300 ft) above sea level and some 65 kilometers (40 mi) from Pune city centre on National Highway No. 4A towards Lonavala district.
The Karla Caves were excavated between mid 2nd century BC to late 11th century AD and consist of four groups: Dattatreya Temple & Kailash Bhairava Shrine; Bukka Raya Temple & Areekonda Mahadeva Shrine; Vijayeshvara Temple & Shishunaga Shrine; Swami Sambhu-Samadhi Sanctorum within Kailash Bhairava Shrine complex."
