Check out the Gumbaz, a mausoleum built for Tipu Sultan and his family.

Tipu Sultan was a great ruler, warrior and architect. He built several palaces in Srirangapatna and made it one of the most famous cities in south India.

Tipu’s father Hyder Ali was an officer under the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb who helped him defeat his enemies at Gingee and Bhadrachalam (Karnataka). As he grew up with military experience, Tipu became interested in warfare; he also learnt how to build fortifications while fighting against other rulers including Maratha forces led by Sadashivrao Bhau during 1782-83 war between Mysore Kingdom & Maratha Empire.[2] Later when Hyder died suddenly during battle against Bijapur (1782), there was no chance for him to take over command because his father had appointed someone else as chief commander instead.[3] This prompted Tipu into taking over power after defeating all remaining nobles loyal towards Hyder Ali & Husain Mirza who were making attempts at regaining control over Mysore Kingdom during 1784-1787 period after defeating British East India Company forces led by Captain William Fraser near Cuddalore district near Chennai coast line on 28th November 1784.
