The sanctuary was gazetted as a wildlife sanctuary by Government of Kerala on 23rd April 2006 with an area of 2.22 km2 (0.8 sq mi). The bird sanctuary covers parts of three other panchayats viz., Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta & Aluva with its administrative jurisdiction extending over 859 square kilometres (334 sq mi).
