The Yak Race is a festival that celebrates the yak race. It has been held annually since 1942 and is one of the most popular festivals in Lachung district. The festival lasts for five days and four nights, from mid-July to early September. The yak racing itself takes place on the last day of this period, when about 500 yaks compete against each other in a series of heats for prizes ranging from silver coins to livestock or cash prizes.
The first two days are dedicated to an exhibition of yak races (Yakman), where participants display their skills by competing against each other while galloping across fields using ropes attached to their necks as reins and pulling upward on another rope attached at an angle so they can keep their balance while galloping forward at full speed with no hands-free!
