The Chilka Lake is located in the state of Odisha, India. It is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia. The lake has a maximum depth of 30 m and lies at an elevation of 1,483 m above sea level. It covers an area of 14 km2 with a length of 20 km and width ranging from 0 to 10 km wide.

The lake is surrounded by many hills on all sides except its north end where it meets the State Highway 74 on its eastern side.[3] It flows into the Bay of Bengal through two large channels namely Chandanapada (South Channel) and Giri Surya Kunda (North Channel). Both these channels are separated by landform known as "Chungarai Ghats" which can be seen clearly when sailing boats around Chilka Lake.[4]

Chilka Lake has a rich biodiversity owing to its vast marshy wetlands along with other habitats like water bodies called "Kundas", "Bhara Kshetra"s etc., which provide home for millions of migratory. These birds are attracted by food fish spawnings over here alongwith other invertebrates like crabs, shrimp larvae etc.,

Due to which these wetlands become important stopover points for migrant species while flying southwards throughout their long journey ahead until they find suitable breeding grounds in more temperate climatic zones farther southwards towards tropical latitudes where majority of species that live here originated from before disappearing thousands years ago due southwards further down south continents like Africa & Australia back then before coming back up northwards again now thousands years later when first humans colonized Americas continent sometime around AD 16th century BC era therefore triggering new
