The city of Siliguri offers a wide range of festivals and events. There are plenty of celebrations throughout the year that you can attend with family and friends, as well as exciting new festivals coming up soon.
The Kanchenjunga Festival is a popular festival in Siliguri. It is held during the month of August and has been organized by the local government to mark the birthday of Lord Buddha. The Festival involves several events such as cultural performances and sports carnivals which attract thousands of visitors every year.
The main attraction at this festival is its famous procession which begins from Dasasila Chaitya Bhoomi Temple and ends at Kamakhya Temple at nightfall.
Siliguri Mahotsav
The Siliguri Mahotsav is a celebration of the town's history and culture, held in March. The festival features traditional music and dance performances, as well as plays that tell stories about the city's past. The event also includes food stalls and an array of shops selling local crafts such as hand-woven textiles, woodcarving and pottery.
The festival takes place at different venues throughout Siliguri including:
Town Hall Square - This venue hosts various cultural events including theatre plays by local artists; kite flying competitions; folk music performances; as well as book sales organized by volunteers from various organizations around town (e.g., EAC).
Bihu is a festival of the Assamese people, celebrated in April. It marks the end of winter and begins the new agricultural season. The Bihu festival lasts for three days with its main events being on the third day known as Bhogali Ki Palki (the chariot of joy). It is believed that this is when children start praying for their future happiness, prosperity and good health during their lives. This festival also marks an important stage in life as it marks new beginnings for everyone including marriage ceremonies, birthdays etc., which take place at this time too!
Durga Puja (or Durgotsab) is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Maha Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The festival is celebrated in West Bengal, India and Bangladesh during the month of October. Durga Puja marks the victory over evil forces by goddess Durga, who was incarnated to protect her husband from being killed by demons in order to restore peace on earth.
The Teesta Tea & Tourism Festival is a festival held in Siliguri, West Bengal. It is held in the month of February every year. The three-day festival celebrates the spirit of tea and tourism.
The first day of this festival begins with a parade through streets of Siliguri where floats decorated with folk art and various cultural items are displayed. This parade includes music bands and dancers who perform traditional folk dances like Bengali Rāghna Bandyopadhyay (Bengal’s National Anthem), Aamar Ekti Jāgir, Bhajan Khela Gharana etc., along with popular songs from Bollywood movies like ‘Kabuliwala’ by Ghulam Ali & ‘Hair End Titli’ by Lata Mangeshkar & Mohammed Rafi respectively
Christmas Carnival is a festival that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. It's a fun time to celebrate with family and friends, as well as get together with friends and family. Christmas Carnival is one of Siliguri's most popular festivals, so you don't want to miss out!
The Christmas Carnival will be held on December 18th-20th at various venues across Siliguri including Deoriatala Park, College Square Mall and Santosh Nandan Park. There will also be many other events happening during this time including live music performances by local bands who'll be playing their favorite songs while thousands of people gather together to dance along under bright lights filled with colors like reds and whites just like Santa Claus' workshop!
Buddha Purnima is the second full moon of the lunar month. It is also known as Buddha Jayanti and it falls on the third day of the waxing phase of the moon.
The festival celebrates Buddha’s birthday, which was celebrated on this day until the 20th century when it was moved to July 4th (US). It is believed that when Lord Gautama attained enlightenment under Bodhi tree, his followers threw flowers at him in appreciation for their faithfulness and devotion towards him.
Saraswati Puja is the most important festival of the year. It's celebrated in August/September and it is a religious festival for Hindus. The goddess Saraswati, who is also known as Goddess of Knowledge and Music, is believed to be an incarnation of Parvati or Durga. She was born from Rudraksha which means knowledge stone or seedling plant that grows into a tree through hard work and perseverance!
The rituals during this puja include worshiping idols made out of clay, incense sticks are burnt on altars while people chant mantras like "Om Namah Shivaya" (I bow before you), etc., making them feel connected with everything around them – nature included!
Holi is a spring festival celebrated all over India. It is also known as the "Festival of Colors" and is considered to be one of the most important festivals in India.
Holi is celebrated on the last full moon day of the lunar month of Phalguna, which falls during March/April each year. It marks the start of spring and marks the beginning of Holi season in West Bengal, Orissa and Bihar states; some parts of Uttar Pradesh also celebrate this festival during winter too!
Lohri, or Holi, is a festival celebrated in India. It's also known as the Festival of Colours. It's celebrated during the month of February and is one of the most popular Hindu festivals across India. This year, it will be celebrated on March 1st to 3rd.
The festival commemorates Vasant Panchmi (Spring) when Lord Krishna was born in Mathura and his birth was celebrated by throwing colours at each other while dancing around a bonfire after bathing in Ganges River or any other river close to your home village/town where you live; it's believed that this way you will get rid of all your sins from last year's Holi celebrations!
Eid-ul-Fitr (Arabic: اُدْتِ الْفَتْح; Urdu: عید الفتح) is the first day of Shawwal. It marks the end of Ramadan and is one of the major festivals in Islam. The festival lasts for three days, starting from sunset on 18 June 2019 to sunset on 21 June 2019.
Eid means 'blessing' or 'festivity', while Fitri means 'festival'. Therefore it can be translated as "Festival of Blessing".
Rath Yatra is a religious festival of Hindus. It is celebrated in West Bengal and Orannis. The festival is held in honor of Lord Jagannath, the lord of the universe. The Ratha yatra starts from Puri on 14th to 15th day after Durga Puja according to lunar calendar and ends on Purnima (full moon night) of Shukla Paksha (dark fortnight).
The Ratha moves during night through various parts of Puri till it reaches Jagannath Temple at Deula Ghat where it stops for one night before returning back again next morning with devotees offering prayers there
Diwali is a festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. It is celebrated with lights, fireworks and parties. It is a major Hindu festival, which falls on the last day of Hindu month of Ashwin (October/November).
Diwali marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana in war. This festival gives us an opportunity to celebrate our freedom from fear and oppression as well as enjoy family time together.
The Ganga Sagar Mela is a religious event held in Siliguri, West Bengal. It is one of the most popular festivals in India and Asia. The Ganga Sagar Mela was started by Kolkata’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2015 as part of her bid to make it a cultural destination for people from all over India.
The five-day festival features music performances by artists such as Bappi Lahiri and Salil Chowdhury among others on its main stage along with traditional games like kho kho or gilli danda (a stick game played with sticks). Other attractions include classical dance performances by students from different schools across Siliguri district as well as traditional costumes worn by men during this time period
The New Year's Eve Bash is a popular event held on New Year's Eve. It is a celebration of the new year, and it is also a time to celebrate with friends and family. The party begins at midnight, and people come from all over Siliguri to attend this event. This year’s bash will be held at Club Street Best Western Hotel in Siliguri on December 31st 2018 (Friday).
