Agartala is a city in the Indian state of Tripura. It is the capital of Tripura and the third largest city in the state. The city is located on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River, which flows from Tibet through China's southern provinces before emptying into Bangladesh from where it begins again.
Agartala was once known as "The Paradise of Gentlemen". This name came from its many genteel houses built by British officials during colonial rule over this region. Today, it still retains this moniker with many fine examples remaining today including Victoria Hall (formerly known as “The Victoria Club”). The city was previously known as "Agar" by its inhabitants, who identified it with a hillock on which they built a fortress named Agar in 11th century AD.
