The present day name "Srirangapatna" originated from Sanskrit word "sriranga" which means red colour or flame and patana meaning footstep or movement towards something." The area was originally called as Senkalaya (which means "the residence") by its earliest inhabitants who were Jains before being conquered by Yashovarman I (985-1017 CE) who gave it his own name – Srirangapatna to honour his queen Subhadrangi Amma who came from North Karnataka.
