Kurseong is a beautiful hill city in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of Kurseong Municipality, which lies at an altitude of 2,335 meters above sea level and has an area of about 39 square kilometers. The city was founded by the British East India Company as a cantonment in 1835 and was named after General Sir George Cambells who defeated Tipu Sultan, the last ruling Sultan of Mysore in 1799 at Seringapatam (modern-day Srirangapattana) near present-day Shimoga District in Karnataka state.
