Brief history and significance of Bodh Gaya

Bodh Gaya is the place where Buddha attained enlightenment. It is also the site where he met his first monks and nuns, as well as first Ananda (his best friend) who was later ordained as a monk by Buddha himself.

The story goes that in about 563 BCE, Siddhartha Gautama (the future Buddha) left his palace life to become a wandering ascetic seeking enlightenment under a pipal tree which became known as Uruvela Tree – meaning “Tree-of-the-Fruit” in Pali language. After years of fasting and meditation he reached enlightenment on this spot on earth which would later become famous as Bodh Gaya after he came out from under its shade. Following this event, he decided to stay permanently at this place until samsara would end itself; henceforth making it an important religious pilgrimage site for Buddhists worldwide .

The Bodhi Tree was not the only tree at this place though. It is said that there were actually three other pipal trees standing nearby this spot at the time of Buddha’s enlightenment, each representing a different kingdom of India at that time. As such, these four trees have been considered sacred by Hindus and Buddhists ever since.
